Accommodation
When planning trips, I start with pleasant cosy-homely feel stays. My husband and I enjoy travelling together on a budget, but not to the point where we can’t sleep well. So, these are accommodation travel resources we use.
- Booking.com: The world’s most trusted online accommodation booking site with no booking fees. Its my favourite site for reliable comparison prices on a wide range of accommodations. I often find last-minute deals here. Their loyalty program offers lifelong savings and travel credits on hundreds of thousands of stays worldwide.
- Agoda: The largest collection of hotels and accommodations in over 200 countries. Great for Asian destinations and offering competitive rates.
- Hostelworld: Perfect for budget travellers looking for hostels and guesthouses.
- Airbnb: While not always the cheapest, it’s great for budget-friendly longer stays and local experiences. We’ve booked numerous stays through them, and the reviews are honest and helpful.
Finding Cheap Flights
Spending less on plane tickets is a huge way to save money. Research is the first step to finding cheap flights.
- Skyscanner: My recommended tool for finding affordable flights on any airline. And the best part is you can set up price alerts for the best deals.
- Expedia: Great for travellers who want to easily plan and book travel from the widest selections of flights, hotels, cruises, and more.
- Google Flights: Great for tracking flight prices and exploring nearby airports for cheaper routes.
Booking Tours & Attractions
For me, planning our trips’ schedules is another important step I never forget. These sites help me organise our activities and make our trips stress-free.
It’s not always best to be the traveller with no plan. Remember, you paid for it, so why not make the most of it by enjoying some light-hearted activities?
- GetYourGuide: It’s easy to book tours and activities with GetYourGuide. I’ve found some great self-guided and guided trips that won’t break the bank.
- Viator: Similar to GetYourGuide, Viator offers reduced popular attraction tickets. I usually compare prices between the two.
- Tripadvisor: In addition to reviews, Tripadvisor’s booking function for tours and activities is really useful. I found cheap restaurants and local experiences via it.
Transportation
Our preferred modes of transportation when visiting new places are rental cars, buses, and trains. Sometimes we just walk to our desired location. This is a great way to save money on your trip.
- Trainline: Ideal for booking trains across Europe, with great deals if you book in advance.
- Omio: Fantastic for comparing various transport options (train, bus, flight) across Europe as well as the globe. It helps me pick the cheapest.
- FlixBus: My top choice for cheap bus trips. We’ve saved a lot on FlixBus cross-city UK excursions. You may take this bus cross-country too.
- Rentalcars: If you want to rent a car for a reasonable sum of money, especially for a group trip, I suggest Rentalcars.com or Discover Cars.
Money-Saving Banking Tools
We use either Revolt, Wise, or Monzo, which are all free credit cards that are good for travelling, to pay for things around a location.
PLEASE NOTE: These cards are unavailable in some countries. However, your local bank can recommend travel credit cards with no foreign transaction fees.
- Revolut: This allows low-cost currency exchange and international cash withdrawals. I saved a lot on hidden fees.
- Monzo: Another excellent card for international spending. I enjoy the ease of tracking expenses in real-time.
- Wise (Formerly TransferWise): Ideal for low-cost international money transfers. I use it to send money abroad.
